In Respect and Resolve: Embracing the Dawn of Sri Lanka’s Drone Era

On June 17, under the distinguished leadership of Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyakontha (Retd), a high-level dialogue brought together key representatives from the defence forces, civil aviation authority, police, and the growing drone operator community. This collaborative forum addressed the challenges faced in Sri Lanka’s fast-evolving drone sector, particularly focusing on the need for clear, efficient regulatory processes that support innovation while safeguarding national security interests.

The Defence Secretary emphasized the importance of a balanced approach—one that encourages technological progress and commercial potential, yet remains vigilant against risks. To this end, he called for enhanced coordination among all relevant agencies to remove administrative bottlenecks and streamline the approval workflow.

A landmark decision was made to empower police stations nationwide to issue “No Objection” letters to legitimate drone operators, under established guidelines and oversight. This move aims to provide a practical mechanism that respects lawful civilian drone use while maintaining strict operational control.

This significant meeting reflects a shared vision of responsibility and progress, marking a new chapter in Sri Lanka’s drone journey—one that honors the discipline necessary for security and embraces the dawn of an innovative aerial era, promising growth and opportunity for the nation.
