Sri Lanka and Russia Join Forces to Secure Energy Future

 

Anura Kumara Dissanayake, President of Sri Lanka, recently met with a high-level Russian delegation led by Roman Anatolyevich Marshavin, focusing on energy stability, refining capacity, and long-term cooperation.

Senior Sri Lankan officials included Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody, Prof. Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development and Minister of Labour, and Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe, along with representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Energy, and Foreign Affairs.

Deputy Minister Marshavin highlighted Russia’s commitment to government-to-government cooperation, technical support, and long-term investment in Sri Lanka’s energy sector. Prior consultations with Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath, Secretary Mrs. Aruni Ranaraja, and Russian Ambassador Levan S. Dzhagaryan ensured the talks were focused and productive.

Coordination of the visit was managed by Mr. Buddhapriya Ramanayake, CEO of the Russian Centre in Colombo, with Dr. Ranjana Senasinghe as the official translator. Support came from the Ministries of Defence and Mass Media, the Russian Embassy in Colombo, and logistical assistance from the Galle Face Hotel.

During the discussions, President Dissanayake and the Russian delegation explored ways to improve refining efficiency, secure energy imports, and establish sustainable frameworks for investment. The talks emphasised the importance of international cooperation and strategic planning to strengthen Sri Lanka’s energy security and resilience.

This visit represents a key milestone in Sri Lanka’s energy diplomacy, reflecting the shared commitment of both nations to sustainable development, regional stability, and long-term partnership. It underscores the proactive role of officials and coordinators in ensuring that high-level engagements produce tangible results.
