“Tariff Chains, Trade Wings: Sri Lanka’s Exporters Rise Through Constraint”

On August 6 in Colombo, the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) convened government leaders and exporters to face the recent 20% U.S. tariff — not with retreat, but with resolve.
EDB Chairman and CEO Mangala Wijesinghe urged a single, disciplined program to counter pressure with precision. Reinforcing this call, Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma of Finance and Planning outlined fiscal support, J.M. Tilaka Jayasundara of Industry and Entrepreneurship pressed for industrial adaptation, and K.A. Vimalenthirarajah of Trade detailed short‑ and long‑term policy measures.
Acting Market Development Director Saumya Kannangara presented opportunities beyond U.S. borders — markets in Europe, Asia, and beyond — offering exporters pathways to diversify, innovate, and reduce vulnerability to single‑market shocks.
In an open floor dialogue, exporters shared concerns, raised ground realities, and put forward inventive strategies for efficiency, value addition, and new product development.
Closing with a pledge for continuous dialogue and follow‑up, EDB Acting Director General (Development) Kumudinie Mudalige, senior directors, chambers, and exporters committed to turning constraint into catalyst, ensuring Sri Lanka’s trade wings remain unbound.
