Enhancing Defence Readiness: Sri Lanka Turns to India for Strategic Opportunities

Colombo, March 25 — Sri Lanka is looking to strengthen its defence capabilities by expanding cooperation with India, Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) said at the India–Sri Lanka Defence Industry Seminar held in Colombo.

The event, organised by the Indian High Commission at the Taj Samudra Hotel under the theme “Identifying New Opportunities and Forging New Bonds,” brought together senior military officials, industry experts and policymakers from both countries.

Welcoming the initiative, the Defence Secretary highlighted the longstanding partnership between Sri Lanka and India, built on mutual trust and shared security interests.

He noted that India’s rapidly advancing defence manufacturing sector offers valuable opportunities for Sri Lanka, particularly in accessing reliable and cost-effective technologies, as well as training, technology transfer and potential joint ventures.

Such collaboration, he said, would enhance Sri Lanka’s operational readiness while reinforcing long-term strategic cooperation between the two nations.

The seminar was attended by Tri-Forces Commanders, senior military officials, representatives of the Indian High Commission, industry stakeholders and government officials.
