According to Ayurveda, rising early in the morning is essential for maintaining a natural circadian rhythm. The early hours of the day are considered ideal for answering the calls of nature. It is during this time that the body is naturally inclined to pass stools and urine. By responding to these urges promptly, one can support their overall well-being and prevent potential health complications.

The Ideal Routine:

We can derive great benefits by incorporating selected practices that cater to our individual needs. While it may not be feasible to perform each practice daily, striving to practice selected practices regularly can still yield significant advantages. Let’s explore some of the recommended activities within Ayurveda’s ideal routine

  1. Hydration and Detoxification: Upon waking, Ayurveda suggests drinking lukewarm water as an initial step. This practice not only aids in attending to the morning’s biological needs but also contributes to the overall detoxification process. By hydrating the body with lukewarm water, individuals can facilitate the elimination of toxins and maintain a healthy digestive system.
  2. Gandusha: Holding oil in your mouth—a practice known as gandusha. This technique, also popularized as oil pulling in the West, is believed to draw out toxins from the digestive system while promoting excellent oral health by cleansing the mouth and gums.
  3. Danta Dhavana: Following gandusha, it is advisable to brush your teeth using a dental stick—a practice called Danta Dhavana. Ayurveda recognizes different types of dental sticks based on body type or prakruti.
  4. Tongue Scraping: To eliminate the toxins that accumulate on the tongue overnight, it is important to scrape the tongue using a tongue scraper. This simple act ensures the removal of toxins, preventing their reabsorption into the body.
  5. Anjana: Attend to your eyes by using collyrium.Using eye drops is another option. This practice offers protection to the eyes and helps alleviate eye strain, contributing to improved visual health.
  6. Nasya and Dhoomapana: Applying oil to the inside of the nose, known as nasya, can prevent Kapha-related issues such as sinusitis. Additionally, the inhalation of medicated smoke, called dhoomapana, aids in clearing the lungs and air passages, promoting respiratory well-being.
  7. Abhyanga: Ayurveda strongly recommends applying oil and massaging the body—a practice known as abhyanga. Apart from its calming effect on the body and mind, abhyanga also nurtures the skin, ensuring its health and vitality. Furthermore, powders can be used for massage, known as udvartana, which not only aids in maintaining healthy skin but also helps in preventing obesity.
  8. Vyayama: Exercise, known as vyayama in Ayurveda, is best performed in the morning. It is advised to engage in physical activity.
