Sri Lanka, Japan Deepen Defence Links and Step Up Sea Security Drive

A high-level Sri Lankan defence delegation led by Aruna Jayasekara deepened defence links with Japan during a two-day visit for the 2nd Japan–Sri Lanka Defence Dialogue, reaffirming strong bilateral ties. The delegation was received by senior officials and Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Japan, Janak Kumarasinghe.

Engagements with Kunimitsu Ayano highlighted Sri Lanka’s defence reforms aligned with public priorities, while Japan praised its commitment to governance, anti-corruption, and a rules-based international order.

Further talks with Miyazaki Masahisa and Kano Koji focused on stepping up maritime security cooperation, strengthening Coast Guard capabilities, and advancing capacity-building efforts. Both sides also emphasised combating transnational maritime crime, expanding defence diplomacy and cultural exchanges, and leveraging Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) programme to support long-term regional stability.
