Virtual access to the China Market for Sri Lanka Exporters enabled during CIIE 2020

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on 6th November 2020 between the Sri Lanka Export Development Board and COFCO Womai Investment Co., Ltd to establish an online National Exhibition Hall to promote Sri Lanka’s export products in the www.womai.com e-commerce platform as a parallel activity to the Sri Lanka’s participation at the 3rd China International Import Expo (CIIE) 2020. CIIE 2020 will be held from 5th to 10th of November at the National Convention Center, Shanghai, China with the intention to expand the access to the Chinese market.

Sri Lanka Embassy in China which is also a party to this MOU played a key role to get this MOU signed during the CIIE 2020. EDB highly appreciates the proactive approach and team work of the Foreign Ministry and Sri Lanka Embassy in China which enabled the EDB to sign this first ever online promotion MOU for China Market.

The concept of the www.womai.com is the virtual exhibition model of China International Import Expo. It provides  an opportunity to display Sri Lanka’s exclusive offers as a country in trade, tourism, culture in the national promotional section. The signed MOU subsequently opens the market for exporters for online trading and promotion in the national promotional section.

www.womai.com is one of the largest e-commerce platform for food related products in China mainly selling oil and foodstuffs. This on-line platform could be used for B2C as well as for B2B transactions.  COFCO Womai Investment Co., Ltd of China is a company which operates under China Oil and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO) Group, the largest food and oil Company under the Government of China. COFCO is specialized in the production, import and export of oil and foodstuff and also the key institution for implementing the policies of  the Chinese Government with regard to oil and food.

Mr. Prabhash Subasinghe, Chairman of Sri Lanka Export Development Board and Ms. Chen Yijia, Deputy Director General from COFCO Womai Investment Co., Ltd signed the MOU.  Mr. K K Yoganaadan, Charge d’ Affaires a.i., of Embassy of Sri Lanka in China representing Sri Lanka signed the MOU physically at the CIIE 2020 exhibition premises.

Sri Lanka Embassy in China and EDB will also facilitate Sri Lankan exporters to promote their products through DJ.Com to the Chinese consumers online.  As a comprehensive online retailer in China, JD.com is one of the most popular and influential e-Commerce websites in the field of e-Business in China.
