A meeting was held at the Ministry of Defence on 5 February to study the feasibility of introducing skydiving activities in Sri Lanka. The session was chaired by Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) and brought together senior officials from key government and tourism authorities.
Representatives of Skydive Sri Lanka made a detailed presentation introducing skydiving, highlighting its potential as an adventure tourism attraction, and outlining proposed operational aspects. Discussions focused on the prospects of developing skydiving in Sri Lanka, the potential contribution to the tourism sector, and the operational, safety, and regulatory considerations required to launch such activities successfully.
The Defence Secretary emphasised the importance of identifying possible bottlenecks and challenges. He instructed officials to closely examine safety standards, regulatory compliance, operational protocols, and other related issues, and to assess the overall feasibility of introducing skydiving in the country. He further directed that the findings be reviewed and discussed in subsequent meetings.
Senior officials from the Civil Aviation Authority, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, along with representatives from Skydive Sri Lanka, participated in the discussion, signalling a coordinated, multi-agency approach to exploring this new tourism venture.
