The Day AI Walked Into Sri Lanka Tourism

Artificial intelligence took centre stage in Sri Lanka’s tourism sector today as the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) held the national celebration of World Tourism Day 2026 at the Taj Samudra, Colombo.

Held from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., the event was conducted under the global theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism”, bringing together representatives from the Government, tourism industry, private sector, academia, and technology and innovation communities.

The programme examined the growing role of digital technology and AI in tourism, including the potential to improve visitor experiences, strengthen tourism services and create new opportunities for businesses and innovators.

A major attraction of the celebration was the Tourism Start-Up Competition 2026, conducted under the theme “AI-Driven Innovation for the Future of Tourism.”

The competition attracted 52 applications in two categories — Tertiary Level and Commercial Level — highlighting the interest among young entrepreneurs, students and tourism innovators in developing technology-based solutions for the industry.

Following an evaluation process, 25 applications were shortlisted for the final stage. The finalists then presented their AI-powered tourism solutions before an expert panel.

At the conclusion of the competition, six winners from each category were selected, producing a total of 12 winners. They were formally honoured during the World Tourism Day celebration, giving them an opportunity to showcase their ideas and solutions to representatives from across the tourism and technology sectors.

The event also placed attention on the wider digital transformation taking place within tourism.

SLTDA highlighted the importance of developing an innovation-driven ecosystem that allows tourism stakeholders to adopt emerging technologies and work together on new solutions.

The growing use of AI and digital tools could help Sri Lanka strengthen its competitiveness, improve destination management, enhance service delivery and offer visitors more personalised experiences.

The programme also stressed the importance of collaboration between the public sector, private enterprises, academia and the technology community in building a tourism industry capable of responding to technological change while maintaining a sustainable approach.

The Tourism Start-Up Competition provided a practical platform for this new direction, bringing together ideas from the tertiary and commercial sectors and giving innovators an opportunity to demonstrate how AI could be applied to tourism.

For Sri Lanka, World Tourism Day 2026 was therefore not only a celebration of the country’s tourism industry but also a look towards what technology could bring to its next phase.

With AI increasingly entering areas ranging from visitor services to business innovation and destination management, the message from the event was clear: Sri Lanka’s tourism story is beginning to include a new digital chapter.
