Sichuan Welcomes Sri Lanka’s Spirit of Hospitality

In a stirring gesture of cultural unity and regional collaboration, Sri Lanka’s timeless charm met the ancient grandeur of Sichuan, as the island nation took center stage at the 11th Sichuan International Tourism Trade Fair, held in the historic city of Leshan, China.

Representing Sri Lanka with pride and purpose, Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, attended as Guest of Honor. His participation at the official launch of the 2025 “Sichuan Tianfu” Cultural and Tourism Consumption Season marked a significant reaffirmation of Sri Lanka’s commitment to enhancing tourism and cultural diplomacy with China.

Held under the broader vision of the One Belt, One Road initiative, the event attracted senior government officials, global tourism stakeholders, cultural ambassadors, and media representatives, reflecting the strategic value of such platforms in building people-to-people connections and sustainable tourism economies.

“Sri Lanka is honored to share its cultural spirit, natural beauty, and enduring hospitality with the people of Sichuan and beyond,” Prof. Ranasinghe said. “This event opens a vibrant pathway for deeper cooperation in tourism, investment, and cultural exchange.”

During the trade fair, Prof. Ranasinghe joined dignitaries from across Asia in inaugurating the Tianfu tourism season — a dynamic showcase of innovative tourism products, immersive cultural experiences, and sustainable travel opportunities aimed at regional and international travelers. A number of bilateral agreements and collaborative tourism projects were also signed, laying the groundwork for future investment between Sri Lanka and partners in China.

As Sri Lanka’s presence at the fair unfolded, so too did a colorful portrayal of the nation’s unique travel appeal — from ancient temples and UNESCO heritage sites, to its growing prominence in Ayurvedic wellness tourism, wildlife experiences, and eco-tourism.

The Deputy Minister engaged in high-level discussions with Chinese tourism authorities, potential investors, and travel industry leaders, presenting Sri Lanka as a premier destination for Chinese travelers seeking authenticity, tranquility, and meaningful connection. The dialogues emphasized business-to-business partnerships, tour operator collaborations, and strategic promotion in key Chinese provinces, especially under the growing ties between Sri Lanka and Sichuan.

Beyond formal meetings, the event featured dazzling cultural showcases, multimedia exhibitions, and tourism investment forums highlighting Sichuan’s scenic beauty and technological innovations in the tourism sector — a rich canvas upon which Sri Lanka’s vibrant narrative found a warm and eager audience.

In closing his visit, Prof. Ranasinghe extended sincere gratitude to the Leshan Municipal Government, the Sichuan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and the organizers for their hospitality and continued recognition of Sri Lanka as a valued tourism partner in the Asia-Pacific region.

“From the ancient streets of Anuradhapura to the misty peaks of Ella, Sri Lanka stands ready to welcome the world — and this renewed friendship with Sichuan brings us one step closer to that shared future of exploration, connection, and celebration.”

— Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe
