Shared Security Vision Guides Colombo Defence Talks

Stephen T. Koehler, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, met with Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), in Colombo during his official visit from 19 to 21 February 2026. The meeting highlighted the growing defence partnership between the two countries and their shared commitment to regional stability.
The discussions covered a wide range of priorities, including maritime security, disaster response, and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation. A key focus was on enhancing Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) through advanced technology and joint operations to ensure better monitoring and protection of Sri Lanka’s waters.
The Deputy Minister expressed sincere gratitude for U.S. support, particularly in improving maritime security and providing humanitarian assistance during the recent “Ditwah” natural disaster. Both sides also emphasized the importance of countering transnational crimes, such as illicit trafficking and other emerging security threats.
The arrival of a new U.S. Coast Guard Cutter was highlighted as a significant boost to the operational capabilities of the Sri Lankan Navy. Leaders reviewed ongoing training collaborations and discussed expanding engagement through joint exercises, professional programs, and cooperative initiatives.
Admiral Koehler reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to shared goals in maritime security, regional stability, and strengthened defence collaboration. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Pacific Fleet Command and the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka, including Defence Attaché Lieutenant Colonel Matthew House, reflecting the high-level importance of the dialogue.
